HurtCallMax · Alberta injury resources
Choose a lawyer using verifiable information and a clear conversation about your matter. A list of “top firms” or a star rating alone cannot tell you who will handle the file or whether the proposed terms suit you.

Verify identity and role
Use the Law Society of Alberta’s lawyer directory to confirm the lawyer’s identity and current practice information. Ask which firm will act, who will be responsible for the file and who will communicate with you day to day.
Ask about relevant experience with your type of incident and the issues likely to matter. A general statement about years in practice is not the same as experience with a particular injury, insurance issue or trial.
Compare the proposed agreement
- The fee structure, taxes, disbursements and any interest or other charges.
- Who funds reports and other expenses while the file is open.
- What you may owe if there is no recovery, you change lawyers or the engagement ends.
- Who authorizes a settlement and how the net amount will be explained.
Check whether the relationship will work
- Ask how to send documents securely and which communication methods are available.
- Discuss language, accessibility, mobility and scheduling needs before assuming they can be met.
- Ask how updates are provided and what to do if a time-sensitive letter arrives.
- Ask the firm to explain any conflict check or other reason it may be unable to act.
Understand the referral relationship
HurtCallMax offers a free connection to participating firms. That connection is not an independent ranking of every lawyer in Edmonton and does not promise that a firm will accept your matter. You remain free to choose another lawyer or decline an introduction.
A comparison worksheet you can actually verify
- Identity and current status: record the lawyer and firm name, and check the Law Society directory. Do not rely only on a trading name in an advertisement.
- Relevant work: ask about matters involving your incident type and the difficult issue in your case, such as WCB, an unknown driver, disputed causation or long-term care.
- Who does the work: distinguish firm founding date, combined team experience and the experience of the person assigned to you.
- Resolution options: ask about negotiation, mediation and litigation, including who would handle a trial if needed. A promise always to settle or always to fight is not a case strategy.
- Language and accessibility: confirm the actual person or arrangement available, including interpreter costs, mobility access and remote appointments.
- Financial terms: record the written proposal, what expenses it covers, and the costs of ending the relationship or changing lawyers.
- Communication: agree on how documents and urgent messages should be sent and what to do when the main contact is absent.
Read awards and reviews in context
A review can describe a client’s experience, but it does not establish the likely result in your matter. A rating changes over time and may cover a firm’s other services or several offices. An award should be checked with the issuing organization, including its date and what the recognition actually measures.
This page no longer republishes changing review totals, loosely dated experience figures or unsupported comparative claims about ten firms. Those details need direct, dated verification. The criteria remain useful whether you contact a firm yourself or request an HCM introduction.
Leave the first discussion with clear next steps
Ask whether the firm is only considering the inquiry or has agreed to represent you. Identify any documents still needed, any conflict check or deadline concern, and when you should follow up. Keep the engagement terms and contact details where you can find them.
You do not have to make a decision during a call because a directory, advertisement or referral describes a firm favourably. Consider whether its explanation of the work, uncertainty and costs is clear enough for an informed choice.
